Maths
Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
National curriculum in England, 2013
At Horspath Primary School we teach maths to discrete year groups using the White Rose Maths mastery programme, which is designed to spark curiosity and excitement and nurture confidence in maths. We teach our pupils to develop a deep and secure understanding of the different mathematical concepts in our curriculum, enhancing this through developing the pupils' skills in fluency, reasoning and problem solving. We expect our pupils to apply their mathematical skills and understanding across the curriculum.
The documents below show the progression of skills that the children develop across a year, in Reception, and through Key Stage 1 and 2. These documents are mapped to the relevant national curriculum documents, e.g. the EYFS, Development Matters (DFE 2021) and Birth to 5 Matters (Early Education 2021) for Reception, and the 2013 National Curriculum for KS1 and KS2.
